The owner, Doug Wilwerding, started painting as a junior in high school back in 1989. The business was originated in Earling, IA on his parent’s farm located on Rural Route 1.
Doug’s parents decided to retire from farming and start an auto body business. With no more planting, harvesting or livestock Doug needed work. His dad, Ray, mentioned that painting would be a good way to earn some money and save for college. His parents bought him his first sprayer. He called on a few farmers, placed an ad in the local newspaper and things took off. With the help of a couple of buddies, Brad and Chad, they traveled around Shelby and Harrison Counties painting houses and farm buildings.
Doug eventually moved his business to Ames, IA to attend Iowa State University where he hired other college students to paint for the summer. After graduating from ISU he moved to Omaha and worked in the corporate world until 1999. He then ventured back into the world of small business doing construction, painting and windows.
The Route 1 business model has always been simple: do quality work, deliver what you promise, communicate openly and be honest.
When you work with Route 1, you will see we love what we do. It shows!
